Created for Community

God created us for community. for relationships: with our friends, spouse, children, coworkers. And God wants our relationships with others to be compassionate, sacrificial, honouring, and forgiving. Cultivating those qualities often means surrendering our expectations for our relationships and trusting Him instead.

Seed

I wonder how many of us, by now, will have either planted some seeds for our garden, or be thinking to do so? How wonderful and amazing it is to consider how these seeds, some so tiny and all quite plain to look at, hold within them the power to burst into life and grow...

Seek First His Kingdom

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. – 1 John 5:14

Till we meet again

Our dear retired Pastor Derek went home to be with our Lord and Saviour on 26th March 2021. Our hearts are united in sorrow. How we will miss him, with his cheery smile and gracious ways. We will always remember his years of faithful service to the Church, and to the Lord with great fondness....

The Great Commission and me

Here is a question that came to me this week which may be thought provoking for us all. “How am I living out “The Great Commission of Jesus Christ” here in Burra and Shetland? in Matthew 28:18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all...

Advent 2020 Begins

This Sunday the 29th of November is the first Sunday in Advent. I wonder how many of us have already bought our advent calendars and are looking forward to opening up the first door and enjoying the treat inside. Advent marks the start of the celebration of Christmas. We remember how Jesus came to earthas a helpless little baby, his mission to be the rescuer of...

Light

Light, how we need it! Here in Hamnavoe we all can see the bright and stalwart Fuglaness Lighthouse at the point of the Hurds, quietly shining in the darkness and guiding all ! Here are some interesting facts about its history. A light was first established here in 1893, built by David A. Stevenson, but this was rebuilt in 1936 as a white round...

Peerie Lights

It’s the time of year again when we see more and more bonny peerie lights popping up in windows, brightening up our communities, this year they are perhaps earlier than ever! Maybe because we are all looking for that bit of brightness in our lives to counteract the continuing darkness in the news. The Bible...

In Rememberance

From the D-Day speech of King George VI in 1944.  Words apt for our day too.  If from every place of worship, from home and factory, from men and women of all ages and many races and occupations, our intercessions rise, then, please God, both now and in a future not remote, the predictions of...
